Antiques Quilts and Toppers
Lot 314:
Description
68 x 82 A hand-pieced unfinished quilt top featuring a variant of the Log Cabin pattern known as Courthouse Steps. The design is constructed from alternating strips of solid-colored fabrics arranged to create concentric rectangular frames around central squares, which are positioned to form large off-white diamond motifs against a multi-colored background of blue and green. The material composition includes a variety of textiles; several of the teal, forest green, and blue strips possess a distinct sheen characteristic of silk, acetate, or a rayon blend, while the off-white fabric has a matte appearance consistent with a cotton or linen blend. The piece is entirely hand-stitched, with visible hand-sewing on the reverse side. The item is an unfinished top only, lacking batting, backing, and finished binding. The geometric, improvisational aesthetic is representative of Southern vernacular quilting traditions.
