Description
68 x 74 An American hand-pieced utility scrap quilt dating to the second quarter of the 20th century, approximately 1925-1950. The top is constructed in a rail fence or bar pattern consisting of square blocks of parallel fabric strips arranged in alternating horizontal and vertical orientations to create a basketweave visual effect. The top is made from a variety of scrap fabrics, primarily heavy utilitarian materials including wool suiting, cotton twills, and flannels. The color palette is dominated by muted tones of navy, gray, brown, tan, and burgundy, with various striped and patterned remnants incorporated. The quilt is hand-quilted with parallel lines of running stitches across the entire surface to secure the batting. The reverse is finished with a blue and white striped cotton utility ticking fabric.
