Description
70 x 80 A vintage American scrap quilt, hand-pieced and hand-quilted in the Diamond Ring pattern, a variation of the Pickle Dish design. The quilt is constructed from numerous cotton fabric patches arranged in elongated hexagonal rings. These rings are comprised of diamond-shaped pieces in various prints and solids, including a red and white gingham with clover motifs, a grey and red striped ticking, solid blue cotton, and various floral prints. These patterned rings are set against a plain white cotton ground. The entire piece is hand-quilted using straight-line and contour stitching patterns. The reverse of the quilt is made from four large, coordinating panels of printed cotton fabric: a yellow geometric floral on white, a grey-green scroll print, a grey striped pattern with small red and black motifs, and a blue polka dot on white. A small area of green decorative embroidery is visible on one block, though it does not contain a discernible name or date. The construction and fabric types are characteristic of mid-20th-century American textile production, typically ranging from the 1930s to the 1950s.
