Description
56 x 66 This unfinished patchwork quilt top is a hand-sewn example of mid-20th-century American utility quilting. The piece is constructed from an extensive assortment of recycled textile scraps, including printed cotton calicos, ginghams, plaids, stripes, solid-colored cottons, denim, and various synthetic or knit fabrics. The patches are assembled in a random scrap design with rectangular and square pieces joined by hand using a white thread running stitch. The reverse of the textile reveals raw, unfinished seam allowances and significant fraying, indicating that the top was never completed with batting, a backing, or binding. The wide range of fabric patterns and textures?specifically the small-scale florals and mid-century synthetic knits?suggests a period of assembly dating from approximately the 1940s through the 1970s.
