Antiques Quilts and Toppers
Lot 20:
Description
50 x 88 This vintage handmade textile is an applique quilt featuring twenty-five individual blocks arranged in a five-by-five grid. Each block contains a tulip motif with flower heads constructed from various scrap fabrics, including calico prints, ginghams, florals, and polka dots in a diverse color palette. The stems and leaves are fashioned from a solid green fabric. The tulip and leaf elements are applied to the white background using a green machine-stitched zigzag finish. The blocks are separated by a lattice-style sashing that features a repeating diamond pattern in a pink and green floral print. The white background of each block displays hand-quilted diagonal grid lines. The quilt is finished with a thin pink and white patterned binding. The reverse side is covered with a full-sheet floral striped backing fabric featuring Lily of the Valley sprays arranged in vertical columns between solid pink stripes on a white ground. The materials appear to be cotton or cotton-blend with a thin internal batting.
