Description
80 x 100 An American sampler quilt featuring twenty individual blocks arranged in a four-by-five grid. Each block displays a unique hand-appliqued motif, including various floral wreaths, baskets of flowers, and bird species such as a cardinal, a hummingbird feeding at a blossom, and a bluebird. The appliqued elements utilize a combination of solid-colored and small-scale printed cotton fabrics characteristic of the mid-century period. The piece is extensively hand-quilted with decorative stitching throughout. The borders between the blocks feature a cable or running vine quilting pattern. Each individual block background is quilted with feathered wreaths surrounding the central applique and fine diamond cross-hatching in the outer areas. The construction consists of a white cotton ground, internal batting, and a plain white cotton backing.
