Lot 143A:
Description
60 x 74 An unquilted American patchwork quilt top hand-pieced from various 19th-century printed cotton fabrics. The design utilizes a repeating block pattern, a variation of the Cross and Crown or Cross and Star motif, featuring central cross elements surrounded by triangles and diamonds that form secondary geometric patterns when joined. The textiles include indigo blues with white discharge prints, madder reds, madder browns, assorted calicoes, and various striped and dotted shirtings. One edge of the piece is finished with a border of curved clamshell or fish scale patchwork.
