Description
This antique cylindrical container is manufactured from mold-blown dark amber glass, designed for the storage of snuff or tobacco. The vessel features a wide mouth with a ground rim and is fitted with a matching glass lid. The lid is secured by a metal wire bale mechanism that anchors to lugs molded into the side of the jar neck. The glass lid features embossed lettering around the perimeter reading AMERICAN SNUFF CO OF NEW JERSEY PAT. JULY 16, 1872. The base of the jar is embossed with P. LORILLARD CO. This dual branding indicates a production period likely in the early 20th century, following the 1900 merger of P. Lorillard’s snuff interests into the American Snuff Company.
