Description
This antique snuff jar is constructed from deep amber glass and features a cylindrical body with a rounded shoulder. The jar is manufactured using a blown-in-mold technique, characterized by numerous visible air bubbles, or seeds, trapped within the glass. It utilizes a metal wire-bale closure system designed to secure a separate amber glass lid. The glass lid is embossed with two concentric circles of text: the outer circle reads PATENTED JULY 16 1872 and the inner circle reads GEO. W. HELME CO OF NEW JERSEY. The base of the jar is embossed with P. LORILLARD CO. This type of container was widely used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for the distribution of tobacco products.
