Description

This antique tool is a long-handled well hook or bucket retriever, traditionally used for recovering items dropped into deep wells or shafts. The device features a wrought iron scissor-action mechanism with inward-curving, pointed tongs designed to grip objects from above. It operates via a dual-shaft wooden handle system; a secondary sliding shaft is connected to a metal pull-rod that activates the tongs. The ironwork and the dark-stained wooden upper section are consistent with late 19th to early 20th-century agricultural tools. The primary light-colored wooden shaft is a modern replacement and retains an adhesive label identifying it as a Wright No. 0760 Tapered Handle. A leather thong is attached through a bore in the top of the secondary handle.
