Description
This is an antique wooden shipping crate produced for Chase and Sanborn’s Seal Brand Coffee, repurposed as a mobile storage trunk. The chest is constructed from thick horizontal softwood planks with a nailed design. The front face features original three-color stenciling in black and red. The branding includes Chase and Sanborn’s in an arched black serif font above a circular red seal with a central coat of arms. The seal is ringed with the text Established 1864 and the Latin motto Ne Cede Malis. The product name Seal Brand appears in large red stylized lettering flanking the central seal, with Coffee in bold black lettering below. Stenciling in the top margin indicates a capacity of 60 1 lb. cans and a net weight of 60 lbs. The bottom margin identifies the company’s origins in Boston and Chicago. The piece has been modified with a hinged lid supported by two internal wooden cleats and four modern black swivel casters mounted to the base for mobility. The interior floor boards show circular marks from the original placement of coffee cans.
