Description

39x 43. An American Empire style four drawer chest of drawers dating to the mid-19th century. The piece features a scroll-front design with an overhanging top drawer supported by two prominent S-curved side pilasters. The drawer fronts are faced with highly figured tiger maple, also known as curly maple. The top, side panels, and pilasters are constructed of cherry with a deep reddish-brown patina. Secondary woods, used for the drawer interiors and backboards, appear to be poplar or pine. The drawers are joined with large, irregular hand-cut dovetails, indicating manual craftsmanship. The chest is fitted with its original large, turned wooden knobs. It is supported by a plinth base and retains four small wooden casters. A modern white paper inventory tag is attached to the upper right knob with the handwritten characters 760 and L 273 A. No maker marks or historical labels are present.
