Lot 73A:
Description
This lot consists of two hand-painted bird figurines designed by artist Ernest Muehlmatt for The Franklin Gallery. The collection features a Bobwhite Quail and a Harlequin Quail, each depicted in a realistic pose and mounted on a textured base designed to simulate weathered wood or driftwood. The figurines are constructed from a cast composite material with intricate surface detailing that mimics feather textures. Both pieces feature hand-painted polychrome finishes. The underside of the Bobwhite Quail includes a felted base and a gold-toned label marked Bobwhite Quail by Ernest Muehlmatt, HAND-PAINTED, copyright 1984 THE FRANKLIN GALLERY. The Harlequin Quail, also known as the Montezuma quail, includes a similar label on the underside marked Harlequin Quail by Ernest Muehlmatt, HAND-PAINTED, copyright 1982 THE FRANKLIN GALLERY. The plumage is rendered with technical precision, showing the distinctive white spotting on the Harlequin and the mottled brown patterns characteristic of the Bobwhite.
