Lot 393:
Description
This vintage beam-style balance scale is designed in the apothecary or laboratory tradition. The instrument features a polished brass horizontal beam with a central vertical indicator needle and decorative hooks at either end. Two circular brass pans are suspended from the beam by fine brass chains. The central brass column is fixed to a rectangular dark-toned hardwood base, which is accented with a brass trim along the upper front edge. A small brass lever at the base of the column serves to stabilize the balance mechanism. The base includes a single integrated drawer with a rounded brass pull knob. The interior of the drawer is lined with cobalt blue velvet and contains a set of graduated brass weights. Visible markings on the weights include 50 GM, 20 G.M, and 10 G.M. Four smaller cylindrical weights and a small black circular insert are also included. A small stamped mark is present on the central pivot area of the beam, though the characters are not clearly legible.
