Description

This is a professionally framed set of seven vintage trade cards issued by Lambert and Butler Cigarettes. The collection consists of cards from the World Locomotives series, originally released circa 1912. Each card features a color lithograph of a specific historical steam locomotive with identifying text below. The locomotives included in this display are: Aitcheson, Topeka and Santa Fe Ry. Locomotive 915; Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway Locomotive 71; London Brighton and South Coast Ry. Locomotive 39; North Staffordshire Railway Locomotive 87; Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Locomotive 1512; Soudan Government Railway Locomotive 110; and Glasgow and South Western Railway Locomotive 126. The cards are mounted in a tiered configuration within a charcoal gray mat accented with gold-toned pinstriping. Below the cards is an inset brass-toned plaque engraved with the series title World Locomotives 1912 in a Gothic-style typeface. The set is housed in a polished, dark-stained wooden frame with a gilded inner lip. The reverse of the frame contains a printed informational sheet titled TOBACCO CARDS: A BRIEF HISTORY, which provides context on the hobby of cartophily and includes market data from the late 1980s, indicating the approximate period of framing.
