Lot 144:
Description
A pair of hand-carved and hand-painted wooden shorebird decoys produced in the American folk art style. Each figure is mounted on a slender dowel support set into a circular, rough-hewn wooden base. The first bird features dark, speckled plumage and a long, tapering beak. The second bird has a light-colored body with dark stippling, a black cap, and a black back. Both decoys are detailed with inset bead eyes and an antiqued finish that includes intentional distressing to the paint surface. These pieces are similar in style to contemporary decorative decoys by carvers such as Richard Morgan or William Kirkpatrick, but no maker signatures, marks, or labels are present.
