Description
This lot consists of two contemporary carved and painted wooden Ruddy Duck decoys. The first specimen is a male drake in breeding plumage by J.P. Selmants of Medina, Ohio. It features a rust-red body, black crown, white cheek patches, and a blue bill, along with a characteristic upright carved tail. The underside is hand-inscribed – RUDDY DUCK – by: J.P. SELMANTS 10/93 and features a circular burned brand reading DUXBURY DECOYS / J. P. Selmants / MEDINA, OHIO. The second decoy is a female or immature Ruddy Duck from the Ducks Unlimited Lac La Croix Collection. It is decorated with mottled brown plumage, detailed feather painting on the wings, and a dark horizontal stripe across the buff-colored cheek patch. The base is hand-marked Lac La Croix / Ducks Unlimited / Collection and numbered 1641. It includes an inset gold-toned metal medallion reading DUCKS UNLIMITED / Special Edition / 1987-88.
