Lot 356:
Description
This lot features a travel poster for Indiana Dunes State Park, promoting the South Shore Line railroad. The work is based on an original 1927 design by artist Leslie Ragan. The composition utilizes an Art Deco aesthetic, depicting beachgoers amongst sand dunes and a lakeside cottage under a stylized, cloud-filled sky. The palette consists primarily of lavender, navy blue, and cream tones. Promotional text at the bottom highlights the proximity of the park to downtown Chicago and lists service stops including Van Buren, Roosevelt Road, 53rd, 63rd, and Kensington. The poster also advertises Dining Car Service and Parlor Car Service. The print is signed within the matrix RAGAN at the lower right of the primary illustration. The lower left margin is inscribed ? 1927 CHICAGO, SOUTH SHORE & SOUTH BEND RAILROAD, and the lower right margin reads ILLINOIS LITHO. CO., CHICAGO, U.S.A. The poster is presented with a wide off-white mat and is housed in a dark-toned metal frame behind glass. The verso is fitted with a white backing board held by tension clips and includes a hanging wire and a modern inventory barcode tag.
