Lot 324:
Description
This lot consists of threescrapbooks and an assortment of loose gemstones. The scrapbooks are primarily quarto in format and reflect a mid-20th-century personal compilation of historical and celebrity interest. One volume is bound in a maroon faux-leather binder with a cord-tie spine, featuring hand-painted gold lettering on the front cover reading WIDE WORLD Scrap Book and the name SWEITZER. Its contents include a variety of newspaper and magazine clippings from the 1940s and 1950s, notably featuring military aviation such as the B-50 bomber Lucky Lady II, naval history, and portraits of cultural figures including Clark Gable, Bette Davis, and Jim Thorpe. A second scrapbook features a brown embossed cover with a large eagle motif and hand-painted titles. This volume contains clippings related to Pennsylvania local history, specifically Elk County and Knoxdale, alongside pedagogical snippets on American political history and portraits of figures like George Washington and Noah Webster. The third volume is bound in brown boards with an embossed ribbon-and-shears motif labeled SCRAP BOOK. Accompanying the books is an assortment of loose gemstones in various cuts, including faceted and cabochon styles. The stones appear in a range of colors including deep blue, forest green, amber-red, and clear. They are individually housed in circular clear protective containers within a foam-lined storage box. Notable items in this group include a small carved shell-style cameo and a black oval stone featuring a small clear inset gem in a square setting.
