Lot 31:
Description
A maritime rudder angle indicator manufactured by John Hastie and Co. Ltd. of Greenock, Scotland. The instrument is constructed from cast and machined brass. It features a cylindrical housing mounted on a tapered pedestal that terminates in a circular base with three pre-drilled mounting holes. The top dial plate is engraved with a curved scale ranging from 0 to 35 degrees on both sides, marked P for Port and S for Starboard. A central brass indicator needle is mounted to the face. All engraved lettering and scale increments are filled with a white pigment for increased visibility. The dial face is clearly marked JOHN HASTIE and CO LTD and ENGINEERS – GREENOCK. A protruding, threaded brass connector pipe is located on the side of the cylindrical housing. This type of instrument was used on a ship bridge or in an engine room to provide a visual readout of the rudder position.
