Description

This lot consists of an expansive collection of United States Army Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) dating from the World War II era through the Korean War. The assortment includes a diverse range of unit types including numbered armies, infantry divisions, armored divisions, and specialized commands. Prominent designs identified within the collection include the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) flaming sword under a rainbow, the octagonal white 8 on a blue field for the 8th Army, and the blue shield with a white A and 5 for the 5th Army. Armored unit representation includes the triangular tank track and lightning bolt designs for the 2nd and 3rd Armored Divisions. Infantry division insignias featured include the 4th Infantry Ivy leaves, the 6th Infantry six-pointed star, and the 94th Infantry circular design. Regional and specialty command patches include the Alaska Defense Command polar bear, multiple Antiaircraft Command (AA) discs, and various Communication Zone (COMZ) insignias. The patches are constructed with embroidered rayon or cotton thread on wool or cotton twill backings. Most examples feature the characteristic cut-edge border typical of mid-20th-century military manufacturing.
