Description
This military-style canteen is of drum pattern construction, consisting of two convex tinned iron plates joined at a central rim. The item features a distinctive turned brass spout and a matching brass screw-cap stopper, which includes an integral loop for a retaining cord or chain. It is equipped with a sturdy iron wire bail handle attached to two soldered loops on the sides. A fragmentary, aged leather carrying strap is knotted around the bail and lower body. While similar drum-style canteens were used by various European militias, this specific form is highly characteristic of North American militia equipment from the mid-19th century, specifically the American Civil War era. No maker marks, regimental stamps, or inspector marks are visible on the metal surfaces. A secondary white paper tag attached to the bail bears a handwritten attribution of Civil War.
