June Antiques and Collectibles Consignment
Lot 222:
Description
This is a cast iron commemorative stake or grave marker identified by its embossed lettering as an item from the Women’s Relief Corps (W.R.C.), the official auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.). The marker features a shield-shaped plaque at the top with an integrated circular loop for flag suspension. The plaque is mounted on a long, square-tapered shaft that includes two sets of decorative projections and terminates in a pointed tip for ground insertion. The obverse of the shield contains three lines of raised text: the top line reads W . S . R . C ., the center line reads 1 8 6 9, and the bottom line reads CORPS . 2 0. The construction is a single piece of cast iron.
