Description
A decorative Spanish smallsword or dress rapier featuring a gold-tone hilt and a slender steel blade. The hilt is constructed with a D-guard and a straight crossguard terminating in molded finials, with a grip wrapped in textured black cord. Attached to the hilt is a large, ornate decorative guard plate in the form of a crowned double-headed eagle. The eagle supports a polychrome enameled shield divided into four quadrants, depicting a gold castle on a red ground and a blue lion rampant on a white ground, representing the heraldic arms of Castile and Le?n. The ricasso of the blade is decorated with etched scrollwork filled with red and black enameling. On the ricasso, there is etched text in a rectangular field that includes the readable characters TOLEDO.Measurements/notes: 37.25 in. L.
