Description
A large Chinese porcelain floor vase decorated in the Japanese Satsuma style with hand-painted polychrome enamels and gilded accents. The body features large panels depicting long-tailed pheasants and smaller birds amidst a landscape of flowering shrubs, trees, and rocky outcrops. These vignettes are surrounded by a cream-colored ground densely filled with scrolling floral patterns and large pink peonies. The vase incorporates various geometric and traditional borders, including a green diamond-patterned band at the shoulder and ruyi-head motifs near the flared rim and base. Raised white slip dots, known as moriage, provide textural detail to the floral and landscape scenes. The underside of the base features a red rectangular stamp with central horizontal text reading MADE IN CHINA, bordered by four Chinese characters above and below. A yellowed adhesive label is also present on the base, reading JAMES ALEX, IMP. / MADE IN CHINA FOR JAMES ALEX, IMP. / OAKHURST, N.J. 07755, U.S.A. Height: approximately 23.5 inches.
