Description

A desktop terrestrial globe featuring lithographed paper gores applied over a spherical core. The political geography represented dates the piece to between 1932 and 1945, showing borders for Manchukuo, Chosen, the Netherlands Indies, and French Indo-China. A printed cartouche is present in the western hemisphere, which includes the readable word Terrestrial, though the remaining text and manufacturer’s name are not legible. The globe is mounted at a fixed angle to a black patinated spun metal base. The North Pole is fitted with an engraved metal time dial featuring a star and ray motif and the words MIDNIGHT, SUNRISE, and SUNSET, all surmounted by a rounded finial. The map surface is decorated with several illustrations of historical sailing vessels, including a Viking longship, a Chinese junk, and a multi-masted ship, as well as an ornate compass rose. A degree scale is printed along the equatorial line. Total height is approximately 10.25 inches to the top of the finial as measured in photo 5. The sphere has a diameter of approximately 8 inches.
