Description
A hand-carved figurine of an elderly Chinese man, depicted as a fisherman or sage, in a dynamic forward-leaning pose. The figure is dressed in traditional layered robes and a wide-brimmed flat hat, with a long, pointed beard and detailed facial features. He stands with one foot elevated upon a craggy, openwork rock formation that incorporates an intricately carved woven basket at its base. The sculpture is mounted on a separate, dark-stained wooden pedestal with a contoured edge. The material is carved bone or a similar white-toned organic material, exhibiting a fine grain and small dark pitted inclusions characteristic of the medium. The side of the wooden base features three incised Chinese characters that are not clearly legible. 4.5 in high
