Description

7 and 12 in tall. This lot features two glazed ceramic pitchers produced by the Warwick China Company of Wheeling, West Virginia, from their early 20th-century Ioga line. The smaller pitcher is a lobed vessel with a pinched spout and a single handle. It is finished in a shaded glaze transitioning from dark brown at the rim and base to a warm yellow-tan in the center. The front is decorated with a transfer-printed portrait of a man in a brown hat smoking a pipe, with faint traces of original gilding at the rim. The base of this piece displays a clear underglaze green backstamp featuring a knight’s helmet and crossed swords above a scroll marked WARWICK, with the word IOGA printed above, along with hand-painted red characters A.35′. The second item is a tall cylindrical pitcher featuring a flared, embossed foot and a decorative scrolled handle. It shares the same shaded brown-to-tan glaze and is decorated with two different Flemish-style transfer scenes. One side shows a man in an apron with a beer stein and radishes at a table, while the opposite side depicts a monk drinking from a mug. While the base of the larger pitcher is heavily crazed and lacks legible factory marks, it is attributed to the Warwick China Company due to its identical glaze technique and thematic decoration.
