Description
22.5×17 A pair of framed monochrome prints depicting two prominent 19th-century American literary figures. The portraits are likely photogravures or high-quality lithographic reproductions based on original charcoal or pencil drawings. One portrait depicts the essayist and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) in a three-quarter profile. The second portrait depicts the poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892), also in a three-quarter profile. Each print is set within a dark mat and housed in a black-painted wooden frame. No artist signatures, publisher marks, or edition numbers are visible on the front of the works or the reverse of the frames. The reverse of the frames features wooden backing boards held in place by nails and partially covered with aged brown paper.
