Description
62 x 78 A vintage handmade patchwork scrap quilt featuring a variation of a string quilt or diagonal-strip pattern. The quilt is composed of square blocks, each featuring diagonal fabric strips in an eclectic mix of colors and patterns including yellow, black, purple, gray, and brown. Fabrics used in the construction include gingham, stripes, polka dots, and small-scale floral calico prints. The blocks are joined with light gray sashing strips punctuated by contrasting cornerstone blocks in solid black, light blue, and purple polka-dot fabrics. The quilt is hand-quilted with visible running stitches that follow the diagonal lines of the patchwork. The reverse is finished with a pieced backing of white fabric featuring a pattern of small pink rosebud sprays and gold-toned scrollwork. The construction techniques and fabric types are consistent with American mid-to-late 20th-century folk textiles.
