Description

34x35This item is a regimental standard for the United States Army 3rd Cavalry Regiment, known as the Brave Rifles. The flag is constructed of a dark blue fabric field featuring a central hand-painted design. The primary motif depicts an American bald eagle with its wings spread, holding a green olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of arrows in its left. A shield with the colors of the United States flag is positioned on the eagle’s breast. Above the eagle is an arc of thirteen five-pointed stars. A red scroll above the eagle is inscribed with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. A larger, ornate three-part red scroll below the eagle is inscribed with THIRD REGt U.S. CAVALRY. The flag is finished on three sides with a thick, yellow-gold fringe. It is currently mounted to a maroon-colored display board with a plain white reverse. The overall design adheres to traditional patterns for regimental colors used during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The execution of the painting and the materials suggest this is a mid-to-late 20th-century commemorative piece or high-end reproduction rather than a period service-used artifact. No manufacturer marks or contract dates are visible on the item or the mounting.
