Description
21×24.5 This large-format silver gelatin development print, dating to approximately 1890, depicts a formal group portrait of approximately 45 uniformed men on the steps of the Allen County Courthouse in Lima, Ohio. The subjects are members of the Ohio National Guard, with kepi insignias displaying the number 8 over crossed rifles, signifying the 8th Infantry Regiment. Several men in the front rows are posed with drawn sabers. The print appears to be a composite of two images, indicated by a faint vertical seam running through the center. In the lower right corner, the photographer credit is partially visible as NER BROS over Lima O, corresponding to the Fenner Brothers studio active in Lima during this period. The reverse of the frame features a damaged red scalloped label for J. J. T…LER PHOTOGRAPH… AND PICTURE FRAMES of Crestline, Ohio. The photograph is housed under glass in a broad, dark-stained wooden frame with an embossed decorative border.
