Description
A set of twelve hand-painted fine bisque porcelain figurines from the Woodland Surprises collection, designed by Jacqueline B. Smith for Franklin Porcelain in 1984. Each individual grouping consists of two separate pieces: a detailed animal figure and a corresponding naturalistic habitat base or shell designed to house it. The collection features a variety of forest and pond creatures including a raccoon in a berry-laden tree stump, a fox in a rocky crevice with a butterfly, a bear in a cave with a pumpkin, a sleeping mouse beside mushrooms, a duckling amidst reeds, a frog on a pink water lily, an owl in an evergreen hollow, a beaver with its stick lodge, a squirrel in a tall hollow log, a rabbit nestled in a cabbage leaf, a bluebird in a hollowed wood structure, and a turtle emerging from under broad leaves. The underside of each base features a black backstamp with the series title, animal identification, artist facsimile signature, and a 1984 copyright date. Original gold foil stickers indicating manufacture in Korea or Taiwan are present on several pieces.
