Description

This is an antique Art Garland No. 2 parlor stove manufactured by the Michigan Stove Company. The object is constructed of cast iron with decorative green-glazed ceramic inserts and mica window panes. The tiered design consists of a cylindrical upper section and a rectangular lower base, all featuring high-relief casting with floral, scrollwork, and foliate motifs. A cast iron finial in the form of an eagle with outspread wings is mounted at the top. The upper tier contains a ring of circular, green-glazed ceramic tiles with relief depictions of birds. The main firebox door features a lattice-work frame holding multiple mica (isinglass) panes. The stove is heavily marked with cast text. The upper tier reads ART GARLAND. The lower rear panel is marked MICHIGAN STOVE CO. DETROIT. CHICAGO. BUFFALO. NO 2. 1886. The rear base panel features a GARLAND STOVES AND RANGES emblem and patent dates: PAT. NOV. 11. 1879, PAT. NOV. 21. 1882, and PAT. JAN. 30. 1883. Internal castings include A G 2 84 and 45.
