Description
A large late 19th-century personal scrapbook of the commonplace book style, folio in size. The volume is bound in a half-leather binding with black cloth-covered boards and leather-reinforced corners. The spine features five raised bands with faint traces of gold-stamped lines and currently illegible lettering. The interior contains a diverse collection of Victorian-era ephemera, newsprint, and illustrations pasted onto heavy, darkened paper pages. Notable contents include a full-page color 1895 calendar surrounded by chromolithograph illustrations of children, and portrait engravings of historical figures including Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Washington Irving, Adelina Patti, and George Frideric Handel. The collection further features a photographic portrait of General and Mrs. Tom Thumb and a large color social caricature titled Incongruities of Life by the artist Hamilton. Newspaper clippings cover a wide variety of subjects typical of the period, including historical anecdotes, scientific reports such as the discovery of a new branch of the Nile, and various poems and social commentaries.
