Lot 501:
Description
15 x 13.5 inches. This lot features a watercolor painting on paper with gouache highlights titled Indian Camp by Lake. The composition depicts an Indigenous man in a seated, contemplative pose on a rocky shoreline. He is positioned next to a birch bark canoe, with a serene lake and mountains visible in the background. The work is executed in a late 19th or early 20th-century illustrative style, utilizing delicate washes and fine brushwork to define the foliage and foreground details. The painting is set behind a dark blue mat and housed in a heavily ornate, gilded wood and composite frame with scrolling foliate motifs. The reverse of the work features a dark-stained wooden backing board secured with nails. A typed white paper label is affixed to the backing board with clear tape and reads: INDIAN CAMP by LAKE / CHARLES RUSSELL.
