Description

Relief Plaque Height: 13 inches Bust Height: 7 inches. This lot comprises two hand-carved stone sculptures. The first is a white marble relief plaque of an irregular oval form, featuring a high-relief depiction of a winged putto or cherub. The figure is shown in a dynamic striding pose, holding a gathered fold of drapery in one hand and a vertical object, likely a torch or bow fragment, in the other. The stone exhibits fine crystalline grain characteristic of marble. The reverse is flat and bears a hand-incised signature in cursive script reading Maito Mondeone 1945. A small pre-drilled hole is present at the top center for hanging. The second item is a carved translucent alabaster bust depicting a young girl with voluminous curled hair. The figure is portrayed in a contemplative pose, leaning her head against her right hand while looking down at an open book. The sculpture is set upon an integral base carved to resemble a fringed soft pillow. The alabaster displays characteristic translucency and subtle natural veining in shades of cream and tan.
