Description

16 inches. A two-gallon American salt-glazed stoneware jug featuring a classic ovoid form with a single strap handle and a narrow neck. The exterior is finished with a salt glaze, exhibiting a characteristic pitted orange-peel texture. The shoulder of the jug is decorated with impressed markings highlighted in cobalt blue. These markings consist of a large numeral 2 positioned above three lines of text that read NEW YORK / STONE WARE CO / FORT EDWARD, N. Y. The underside of the jug is unglazed and bears a handwritten inscription in black marker that reads NEWBURY VT. / ’91. A weathered wood or cork stopper is fitted into the neck of the jug. The construction shows typical 19th-century manufacturing characteristics, including small pits and kiln furniture marks in the clay.
