Description
This lot features two mid-20th-century advertising textile bags of different utility. The first is a self-cooling water bag manufactured from heavy tan canvas, designed for automotive travel or camping. The front is printed in green ink with a palm tree graphic and text that reads CONGO WATER BAG, A REFRESHING DRINK FOR MAN OR MOTOR, USE WITHOUT SOAKING, and BEST SERVICE WILL BE OBTAINED AFTER FIRST FILLING. The bag includes its original cork stopper seated in a metal-rimmed spout and a heavy twisted rope handle attached through metal rings at the top corners. The second item is a 25-pound cotton sugar sack with woven red and blue horizontal stripes near the top and bottom edges. The front bears printed blue text reading C and H SUGAR and PURE CANE BERRY GRANULATED within a red triangle. The reverse side identifies the piece as a TOWEL BAG (WASHING REMOVES PRINTING) and provides the company name CALIFORNIA AND HAWAIIAN SUGAR REFINING CORPORATION of SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA. A small printed mark at the bottom center reads COPYRIGHT 1934 above the letter E. An instructional box in the upper right corner explains how to open the bag by pulling specific strings.
