Description

An Victorian silver-plated pedestal cake basket, commonly referred to as a bride’s basket, executed in the Aesthetic Movement style. The piece features a shallow, circular bowl mounted atop a flared, footed pedestal base. An arched swing handle is joined to the rim by two hinged mounts and includes a central grip decorated with scrollwork and a shell motif. The interior of the tray is decorated with fine line engraving depicting sprigs of bleeding hearts and foliage tied with ribbons. A repeating geometric diamond-and-dot border is engraved around the outer rim of the bowl and the foot of the pedestal. Significant wear to the silver plating is visible on the underside and high points, revealing a yellowish base metal. There are no legible manufacturer marks or hallmarks visible on the base or body.
