Description
A pair of large hand-painted decorative figurines depicting classic clown character archetypes. The figures are constructed from a heavy plaster or chalkware composite material, which is visible on the underside of the bases along with embedded fibers. The first figure is a sad clown with a downturned mouth, a tear on his cheek, and a small peaked hat. He wears a yellow jacket with white ruffled trim and red pom-pom buttons over orange trousers. He holds a staff, the top of which is absent. The second figure is a happy clown with a wide smiling expression and a small top hat. He wears an orange jacket with white ruffled trim and a red bow tie over yellow trousers and carries a small white poodle in his arm. Both figures stand on circular tiered bases decorated with a recessed star motif. The figures are finished with metallic gold-tone paint on the faces and hands, contrasting with the bright polychrome colors on the costumes. No maker marks, factory stamps, or model numbers are visible on the exterior or the buff-colored undersides of the bases. Sad clown height: 25 inches Happy clown height: 24 inches.
