Description
A set of chess pieces hand carved from two varieties of stone. One group is crafted from a translucent pale green and white stone, likely onyx or calcite, while the opposing group is made from a reddish brown marbled stone with heavy veining. The pieces are carved in a Mesoamerican folk art style, featuring rooks shaped as stepped pyramids, knights as zoomorphic heads, and kings and queens as tall, tiered figures. The collection is housed in a clear glass bowl featuring a footed base with vertical fluting and a wide, flat, silver colored metal rim. An impressed mark is located on the exterior of the metal rim of the glass bowl. The mark is a small rectangular cartouche, but the characters within it are not legible and do not spell a name. No other maker marks, labels, or signatures are present on the items.
