Description
A glazed earthenware jar featuring a barrel-like form with a deeply incised faux bois or wood-grain texture. The exterior is finished in a dark brown glaze, while the front is decorated with a large, raised relief medallion within an off-white oval frame. This medallion depicts a horse head in profile, detailed with a brown coat, a white blaze on the face, and a dark, flowing mane. The jar includes two gold-tone metal rings attached to ceramic lugs on the sides, which were designed to hold a wire bail handle. The matching lid is finished with a sculptural handle in the form of a Western horse saddle. A cork gasket is fitted to the inner rim of the lid to provide a seal. The interior of the jar is coated in a smooth, brown glaze. The underside of the base shows three circular kiln stilt marks and an impressed mark in the center; however, the characters within this mark are not distinct enough to be read as a name or word.
