Description
This lot consists of three pieces of underglaze transfer-printed earthenware in a flow blue style, characterized by the intentional blurring of the cobalt pigment into the glaze. Two matching plates feature the Watteau pattern, depicting a fete galante scene in a garden landscape with a couple in eighteenth-century attire; a man is seated next to a woman holding a stringed instrument, with a small dog at their feet. The plates feature scalloped rims and a wide border composed of scrolls, lattice panels, and floral sprays. The reverse of each plate bears a printed blue circular stamp reading WATTEAU, N.W.P. Co, and ENGLAND. One plate has impressed marks 11 and 2, while the other has impressed marks appearing to be L2 and 7. The third piece is a saucer with a deeply scalloped and molded rim, decorated with a central stylized floral medallion and four deep cobalt blue lobes containing white scrollwork. The underside of the saucer has an impressed numeral 8 and a small, faint blue mark that is not legible as a name.
