Description

This late 19th-century foot-powered scroll saw base features a decorative tripod frame made of cast iron with a solid wood top, likely oak. The cast iron frame is designed with three slender, curved legs and houses a central flywheel with three large circular cutouts. The wooden table top is uniquely shaped with a broad circular work area that tapers into a long, rectangular rear extension. Several pre-drilled holes are visible on the surface of the wood where the mechanical saw components were originally mounted. A horizontal metal tensioning rod and a small turned wooden handle are attached to the underside of the frame. The machine is an incomplete unit, consisting only of the support base, flywheel, and table top, lacking the upper saw arms, drive belt, and foot-treadle assembly.36x20x38
