Lot 75:
Description
This Alaska Native sculpture is hand-carved from natural material by artist Dominic Mayac of King Island. The work depicts a bird rookery on a cliffside, artistically incorporating different sections of the walrus tusk. The central cliff face is carved from the textured secondary dentine core, while the surrounding elements are fashioned from the smooth, white outer ivory layer featuring angular, faceted carving. A group of small birds, identified as murres or puffins, are mounted to the cliff face. Each bird figure is individually carved and finished with black and white pigment, with orange accents on the beaks and feet. The underside of the base is signed Dominic Mayac in black ink. 2.5×4
