Lot 70:
Description
This figure is a carved elephant ivory depiction of a standing Chinese elder or official, dated to the late 19th or early 20th century. The man is carved with a cheerful facial expression, a long mustache, and a thin beard. He wears traditional Chinese garments, including a cap and a robe with incised medallion patterns and decorative borders on the sleeves. The back of the figure features a long, braided queue, a hairstyle mandated during the Qing Dynasty. The hands are tucked into the sleeves in a formal posture. The figure is supported by a separate, multi-tiered rectangular base. Cross-hatch Schreger lines are visible on the base, identifying the material as elephant ivory. The piece has a natural, aged creamy yellow patina. 6 in high.
