Lot 445:
Description
This lot consists of two distinct hand-carved wooden figures representing different cultural folk art traditions. The first is a Korean folk art figure depicting a woman in traditional hanbok dress. She is portrayed carrying a large, faceted bundle on her head while a child is secured to her back. The sculpture is finished with a dark reddish-brown stain and stands on an integral, faceted octagonal base. The second item is a stylized female figure in an African aesthetic, characteristic of trade art from West or East Africa. Carved from two-toned hardwood, it displays the natural contrast between dark heartwood and lighter sapwood. The figure is rendered with highly elongated proportions and carries a vessel on its head, mounted on a separate rectangular wooden plinth. 12 in high.
