Description
This lot features two hand-carved wooden figures representing different regional ethnographic styles, likely produced for the mid-20th-century export market. The taller figure is carved in a style consistent with the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, characterized by an elongated, leaf-shaped mask face. The face is decorated with incised concentric and geometric patterns highlighted with light-colored pigment. The figure has a stylized body with hands on hips and wears a skirt of dried natural raffia fibers. The second, shorter figure is a squat anthropomorphic carving with a large rounded head and eyes inlaid with silver-toned metal tacks. It is adorned with thick, twisted fiber cord wrapped around the neck and waist. Both figures are constructed from hardwood with a dark-stained finish. 13.5 in high.
