Description
This Chinese wall sculpture is hand-carved from a single bamboo root or rhizome. The figure depicts the immortal Shou Lao, the God of Longevity, characterized by a prominent forehead and a jovial, smiling expression. The carving utilizes the natural anatomy of the plant, where the smooth upper portion of the bamboo culm forms a cylindrical hat, and the dense mass of fine, fibrous rootlets is left untrimmed to create a voluminous beard and flowing hair. The face is sculpted into the main body of the root with stylized features including narrow eyes, high cheekbones, and a broad nose. The reverse shows the hollowed-out interior of the rhizome with characteristic horizontal segmented ridges. A wire loop is attached to the back for wall mounting. The piece exhibits a deep, warm brown patina throughout.
